Sick member of staff

We’ve all heard the horror stories about the amount of sick days, legitimate or otherwise, that are taken in the UK each year.

Big businesses can easily absorb the temporary loss of a member of staff due to illness, but for SMEs, the knock-on effect is more pronounced.

However, simple and basic steps can be taken to limit that damage.

It’s imperative that an adequate level of employers’ liability insurance in place, to cover liabilities arising out of injury, serious illness or even disease sustained during employment.

Even more help is at hand from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD - www.cipd.co.uk), who have teamed up with the Health and Safety Executive and ACAS, to produce a free toolkit aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises.
The toolkit is designed to provide a summary of how to manage absence and offers critical advice on establishing if your company has an absence problem, how to develop an absence strategy and how most effectively to deal with long and short-term absenteeism.
