The Electrical Safety Council is lending its support to the new electrical installation skills competition ‘SkillELECTRIC’ run by SummitSkills, the Sector Skills Council for Building Services Engineering. The Electrical Safety Council has been involved in the development of the scheme over the past year and is also now providing financial support through sponsorship of the competition, which aims to promote standards and skills within the electrotechnical industry. The contest is currently underway throughout England and Wales with competitors undertaking a series of rigorous practical tests based on real scenarios to demonstrate their electrical skills, knowledge and ability. The Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust and the Electrical Training Trust of Northern Ireland are running similar competitions in Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively. The best electricians from each of the four home nations will go on to compete in the UK final this autumn with the winner having the chance to compete in the next WorldSkills competition, to be held in Canada in 2009. Phil Buckle, Director of Charitable Affairs at the Electrical Safety Council says, “The level of knowledge, expertise and practical skill of professional electricians in the UK should be acknowledged. This type of initiative really helps to raise the bar when it comes to promoting excellence within our industry and we particularly hope that this competition inspires those coming into the industry to strive for the highest possible standards.” Neil Collishaw, Head of Skills Competitions and Awards for Summit Skills adds, “We really appreciate the Electrical Safety Council’s involvement and support. Everyone benefits from participating in SkillELECTRIC - for the competitors the rewards are fantastically self-satisfying; and for employers, highly adept employees contribute to the success and profitability of their company. We look forward to working with the Electrical Safety Council in our search for the UK’s finest electrician.” |
